First Johnson Scholarships Awarded

Four students studying poultry science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North
Carolina State University have been selected to receive the first Marvin and Grace Johnson Poultry
Scholarships.

The scholarships will help pay tuition and fees for Lauren Kelly Mabry of Albemarle, Justin Paul
Sinclair of Clinton, Lauren Elizabeth Weeks of Dunn, and Wesley Ryan Wilson of Magnolia. Sinclair,
Weeks, and Wilson are majoring in poultry science, while Mabry has a double major in poultry and
animal science. Each scholarship is worth approximately $2,000 per semester. Sinclair expects to
graduate in December 2009 and Wilson in May 2010. Weeks is a rising sophomore and Mabry a
rising junior.

The scholarships are made possible by the Marvin and Grace Johnson Poultry Scholarship
Endowment, which was created in the fall of 2008 with a gift from the Johnson family and friends of
$250,000 to N.C. State University. The endowment recognizes the contributions of E. Marvin
Johnson and his late wife, Grace Powell Johnson, to the poultry and food industries.

Marvin Johnson’s family founded what today is House of Raeford Farms Inc., which sells more than
1,500 turkey and chicken products and operates processing plants in North Carolina, South Carolina,
and Louisiana. House of Raeford is the fifth largest privately owned company in North Carolina, and
the sixth largest turkey producer and the seventh largest chicken producer in the United States. The
Company employs more than 6,100. Johnson, 82, today holds the title of chairman of the board.
“We are pleased to be able to support the higher education goals of these students, and at the same
time contribute to the development of future leaders in the poultry industry”, said Bob Johnson, CEO
of House of Raeford Farms.

Priority for the scholarships is given to applicants from communities where the Company has
processing and farm operations. In addition to tuition and fees, scholarship recipients will have the
opportunity to participate in summer internships coordinated by House of Raeford Farms and the
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
