Each year as part of House of Raeford Farms FLOCK’s sponsorship of the Carolinas Classic All-Star Basketball Games, we select a benefactor of all ticket proceeds and an additional $25,000 donation from FLOCK. We were pleased to honor ACCESS of Wilmington as part of the recently concluded 2024 event. In addition, the student-athletes competing in the games also worked one-on-one with ACCESS participants at a special basketball clinic. It was a great way to encourage those with special needs, and to expose the athletes to some important life skills to carry into the next season of their careers.
ACCESS of Wilmington dedicates their services to enriching the lives of individuals with disabilities through adaptive sports, recreation, and fitness programs. With a wide range of opportunities catering to children, adults, and veterans, ACCESS is committed to breaking down barriers and fostering a sense of community and inclusion for all. At the heart of ACCESS is the Miracle Field where ACCESS operates the Miracle League of Wilmington. In its eleventh season, The Miracle League of Wilmington provides adaptive tee-ball, classic and competitive baseball leagues, providing individuals with disabilities the opportunity to participate in America’s favorite pastime. Next to the Miracle Field, ACCESS built the Kiwanis Miracle playground, the first and largest wheelchair accessible playground in New Hanover County.
ACCESS of Wilmington supports our Veterans through Project SOAR providing adaptive sports and recreational opportunities such as surf camp, deep-sea fishing, golf, therapeutic horsemanship, kayaking, and sailing. Through Project SOAR, ACCESS honors their service to our nation by providing Veterans with opportunities to engage in sports tailored to their needs, promoting physical fitness, camaraderie, and overall well-being. Additionally, ACCESS Fit offers inclusive exercise science-based adapted fitness classes empowering the participants to achieve their fitness goals and lead healthier lives.
In addition to these flagship programs, ACCESS offers a diverse array of recreational activities through Play and Access Adventures. From kayaking and cycling to ice-skating and surf camp, these programs provide individuals with disabilities the opportunity to safely engage in recreational activities and enjoy the beauty of our coastal region. Access Adventures takes this a step further, offering off-road wheelchair adventures on area beaches and hiking trails, allowing mobility impaired residents and visitors to experience the thrill of outdoor recreation in an accessible and inclusive manner. With a reach that spans over 750 individuals and their families, ACCESS of Wilmington is committed to building community and eliminating barriers to health and wellness for individuals of all abilities.
