On October 28, National First Responders Day, FLOCK Cares honored 10 School Resource Officers (SROs) across Duplin County, NC and Greenville County, SC. These dedicated professionals play a vital role in keeping schools safe and nurturing positive relationships with students and staff.
FLOCK Cares is a program started in 2021 and designed to recognize those who serve, often without any recognition. These individuals are dedicated to serving their fellow citizens without regard to age, gender, race, economic background, or any of those areas that often divide us.
“SROs have become an integral part of the leadership in our schools, often acting as a positive adult mentor for students, providing support and guidance,” said Tom Teachey, FLOCK board member as well as outreach coordinator in Duplin County. “Their presence can help make a constructive difference in school effectiveness.”
Each school organized their individual ceremonies to have the most impact on the SROs as well as the students and staff. Whether there were hundreds of students in a gymnasium or a smaller group in the media center, each officer was genuinely surprised. SRO honorees recognized by FLOCK included:
Duplin County:
- Corporal Tony Johnson – Rose Hill-Magnolia Elementary
- Officer William Holland – Kenansville Elementary

- Corporal Matthew Byrd – Beulaville Elementary
“Corporal Byrd continues to be an incredible asset to our Beulaville Elementary family. He goes above and beyond each day. Whether he is greeting students in the morning, lending a hand during dismissal, or stepping in wherever help is needed, his calm presence and dedication make a real difference.”

- Lieutenant William Sandlin – Chinquapin Elementary

- Master Deputy Mike McGaha – Paris Elementary

Each SRO received a gift card from FLOCK in appreciation of their service. The presentations were filled with heartfelt moments—including spontaneous hugs from students—that reflected the deep connections these officers have built. FLOCK is proud to support those who make a lasting difference in their communities.
