In small towns across the Southeast, community organizations play a vital role in supporting senior citizens and disabled residents. For 70 years, House of Raeford Farms has been committed to serving these communities, starting in Rose Hill, North Carolina, and expanding throughout the region. One such community is Hemingway, South Carolina, near our further processing operation in Nesmith, where a local nonprofit is making a significant impact.

Since 1997, the Caring and Sharing Food Pantry of Hemingway has been providing essential nutrition to seniors and disabled residents, many of whom rely solely on Social Security income. Recognizing the growing need, our nonprofit House of Raeford Farms FLOCK began donating 4,000 pounds of chicken every quarter to the pantry in 2024.

“Given the rising food costs in today’s economy, the decision to assist this organization was a ‘no-brainer,’” said Randall Brough, safety director at House of Raeford’s Hemingway location. “God has really placed His hand on this project, and through the generosity of so many caring people, we are making a lasting impact on our local community.”

A Mission Rooted in Faith and Service

Carl and Kay Harmon

Caring and Sharing was founded by current director Carl Harmon and his wife Kay after they felt called to help those experiencing food insecurity. “God put it on my heart to begin an outreach for those in need,” said Harmon. Inspired by Matthew 25:40 “Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it for one of the least of these brothers or sisters of Mine, you did it for Me”—Harmon and his wife began distributing food from the back door of their home. Over the years, generous supporters helped them acquire land and build a distribution center, allowing them to expand their mission.

“We serve Williamsburg, Florence, and Georgetown counties, proactively reaching out wherever we learn of a need,” said Harmon. “The chicken donations from House of Raeford have been a real blessing to the recipients.”

With a volunteer-driven team, Caring and Sharing provides food assistance to over 1,000 individuals each month. Recently, they installed scanning equipment to better track their outreach and measure its success.

As we do in communities across the Southeast, FLOCK remains committed to supporting local residents, ensuring those in need receive the help they deserve. By continuing these partnerships, we hope to expand our impact and encourage others to join us in making a difference.
