We create lasting memories the first time we go fishing as a child. We share a rite of passage with our dad or maybe a close friend. On Saturday morning, October 7, Wallace, North Carolina Police officers helped over 100 kids bait their hook and cast their line at Boney Mill Pond, part of Farrior Park in Wallace. For many, this was their initial opportunity to catch the big one.
It was the police department’s second year offering the free Cops and Bobbers experience to the community, targeting boys and girls ages 4 – 14. Just over 70 kids registered in advance. Thanks to a $2,500.00 donation from House of Raeford Farms FLOCK, each preregistered child was eligible to receive a new fishing pole.

“We at the Wallace Police Department are true believers in community engagement, especially with the youth, as they are our future,” said Keli Wilson, Police Administrative Manager. “We view this as a multifaceted approach that fosters a firm foundation for us to establish meaningful relationships with the younger generation, as well as the citizens of Wallace and surrounding areas. In addition to building rapport, our officers can go to work each day knowing they are proactively impacting their community. As a result, this helps law enforcement officers do their jobs better, keeping our community safer.”
In addition to the fishing, visitors enjoyed complimentary face painting from RAD Artistry in Jacksonville; classic Italian ice from Sunset Slush; and peanuts, candy, soft drinks, and sandwich buns provided by Pender Leanuts. Keli Wilson also grilled sausages and hot dogs for those with more of an appetite.

One of the pillars of FLOCK is youth development and this event certainly fulfilled that mission. Not only were the children excited to fish, but also the occasion was a wonderful chance for families to spend time together in a beautiful sun-filled setting. Everyone is looking forward to next year!
